Recently, Kendrick Lamar celebrated his little sister’s high school graduation and gifted her with a 2017 Toyota sedan. His sister, Kayla Duckworth, posted photos of the car on Instagram, and was clearly thrilled with the gift.

Kendrick caught some criticism, however, from people who said he has too much money to have bought her just a Toyota. They expected something more extravagant. Pretty ridiculous criticism, considering any high school grad should be ecstatic to receive a new car (and Toyotas are nice!).

Earlier today, we told you about Kendrick’s appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood on Real 92.3 and how he almost actually named his most recent album What Happens On Earth Stays On Earth instead of Damn.

In that interview, Kendrick also addressed the criticism he has received over buying Kayla a Toyota instead of something fancier. This comes at the 30:05 moment of the interview, which you can watch above.

Kendrick laughed when the subject was raised. He had a thoughtful reason for giving Kayla a Toyota.

“I don’t know if it’s the public or it’s kids on the internet that’s 12 years old and 13 and figured, you know, she’s supposed to have a Lamborghini by Kendrick Lamar,” he said. “Yeah, it’s a trip.”

Big Boy then told Kendrick that his nieces recently graduated and he told them not to expect a gift like the Toyota Kendrick gave to his sister. That was too expensive.

“I got them tickets to BET weekend,” Big Boy said. “That was their graduation present.”

Kendrick addressed the public’s perspective of his wealth.

“You know, people’s perspective of me and the money that I have and the stages and places I’ve gone to, they probably expect me not to have the same morals and values that I have,” Kendrick said. “I want to carry over to my family, to my little sister or whatnot, 'cause she’s younger than me so she didn’t have to go through the same struggle that me and moms had to go through.”

Kendrick said he wanted to pass along a spirit of gratitude and “baby steps.” Pretty good lesson for a big brother to pass along, right?
