Bengali belongs to the Indo-Aryan group of languages and has the largest number of native speakers in the eastern region of the Indian subcontinent called Bengal. - There are two styles of writing Bengali which have varying syntax and vocabularies. These are ‘Shadhubhasha’ or chaste language and ‘Choltibhasha’ or running language. The former has a stronger influence of Sanskrit in its vocabulary and longer verb inflections. The more dominantly used ‘Choltibhasha’ is characterized by a stress on shortened verb forms and colloquial idioms. It is the standard form of spoken and written Bengali.
